"a good, or neutral posture looks different on everyone"
Just uttering the word "posture" can spark an almost reflexive shuffle as people try to straighten up in their chairs.
Many admit their posture needs work, yet understanding what "good" posture or a neutral spine is, remains a mystery to most.
I was called to see a client recently, whose low back pain had flared up unexpectedly. We'd been working together for a while, and he'd been diligently avoiding known triggers, practicing daily spine hygiene, and had never been in better shape. So, what went wrong?
After digging a little deeper, we uncovered an intriguing culprit. He had spent the weekend speaking at a conference. Video footage from the event revealed the source of his pain: his posture.
To most people, his posture appeared impeccable. But here's the twist:
Good posture, as traditionally defined—standing tall, shoulders pulled back, chest out—was precisely what aggravated his condition. He confessed to feeling compelled to maintain this "good" posture, despite the pain it induced. He even felt guilty when not standing in a position that aggravated him, thinking that enduring it will lead to him feeling less pain in the end.
My response was to challenge this notion. Good posture isn't a one-size-fits-all concept. It's about finding what works for you, what doesn't cause pain. It's unique, individual.
This story underscores a critical lesson: managing back pain effectively requires a custom approach. It's not about conforming to a standard posture but understanding and listening to your body's needs.
A thorough assessment with a specialist is crucial. It's not just about pinpointing the pain source—it's about exploring your lifestyle, daily routines, and even the minor movements you make throughout your day. This holistic view not only addresses the current pain but also tailors strategies to ensure long-term health and prevent future issues.
As my client learned to adjust his posture to his body's specific requirements, he found relief not just from pain but from the pressure to conform to outdated standards. This journey is about more than just alleviating symptoms; it's about redefining what true, personalised posture means for lasting back health In your corner
