I remember being in my first PT training course, looking around the room and seeing a bunch of testosterone-fuelled young kids, no older than 21.
I was already 24 and my “slow start” made me feel old.
In fact I later found out this isn’t uncommon. Most personal trainers tend to be in their early to mid-20s.
And this is a big problem in the fitness industry.
Because a young, limber 20-year-old body is nothing like a mature 40-year-old’s.
Which means they don’t know what it feels like to move around and exercise when your joints feel like rusty hinges.
For them, burpees and all kinds of explosive moves are easy.
And because their bodies are more forgiving… they spend less time perfecting techniques in favour of fast-paced workouts.
However when I started regularly training clients–many of whom were over 40 and spent decades desk-bound–I realised this type of workout would do more harm than good.
They came to me in a fragile and vulnerable state, their backs in terrible condition.

What’s more, because it had been so long since they last worked out, they’d invariably push themselves too hard, forgetting how much strength they’d lost over the years.
And the result? An injury that could last for months or even years.
When I saw how devastating low back pain is… and how inadequate traditional PT school was to overcome this…
I went back to study, spending hours researching and deep diving into scientific textbooks.
That’s when I discovered one of the world’s leading back-pain experts, Dr. Stuart McGill and became his student.

Dr McGill has been a professor Spine Biomechanics at the University of Water for over 32 years, worked with top athletes and sports stars across the world and has developed methodologies and practices that have revolutionised back pain correction.
And that’s why his knowledge and understanding of techniques to fix low back pain is unparalleled.
Through studying with Dr McGill and learning his McGill Method, he’s not only shown me just how important it is to strengthen the back (and build stability throughout the body)...
…but given me tools and techniques to strengthen my own back and help my clients get their health back.
